The language of hands

Hand movements play an important role in communication and it cannot be replaced by spoken words. It conveys richer and more authentic information. Subtle changes in hand movements can reflect changes in emotion. When we want to hide our inner emotions, hand movements will always reveal the emotions that the face or body intends to hide. When we habitually repeat a certain hand movement, the rhythm and frequency of the hand movement imply the ups and downs of people's emotional states, making a pause in a dialogue like punctuation marks, and filling the gaps in communication. Therefore, I want to explore and decipher the hand gestures and express the form visually.

My experiment starts with recording a video of my hand at each emotional state. Then I edit the video and trace the motion of hand after arranging each frame in a timeline. I refined and drew each abstracted line in the form of a calligraphy brush, and used the abstracted brushstrokes to create characters. Through this experiment, I found a way of translating motion into a visual sign.
